The Library of Michigan is hosting author
Valerie Winans on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at 6:00PM in the Lake Erie Room for the release of her book
The Extraordinary Life of Edwin B. Winans: From the Stampede for Gold in California to the Capitol of Michigan.
Valerie's book highlights the life and legacy of former Michigan Governor
Edwin B. Winans (1826-1894). Prior to entering politics, Winans had ventured west to participate in the California Gold Rush. Following his return to Michigan, Winans was twice elected a member of the Michigan State House
of Representatives (1861–1865) and was a delegate to the state constitutional convention of May 15, 1867. He also was elected to the United States House of Representatives for two terms (1883-1887) and served one term as Michigan Governor from 1891-1893.

The Library of Michigan will be closed Saturday, August 31 through Monday, September 2 for the Labor Day holiday. The Library will reopen

2024 National Book Festival and Michigan Great Reads from Great Places Selections
The
2024 National Book Festival will be held in the nation’s capital at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Saturday, August 24, from 9:00AM - 8:00PM (doors open at 8:30 a.m.). The event is free and open to the public.
A selection of programs will be livestreamed online, and videos of all programs will be available shortly after the Festival. Library of Michigan staff will be attending the event to represent Michigan during the festival.
Part of the event is highlighting the
Great Reads from Great Places list. It is a selection of books that represent the literary heritage of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and distributed by the
Library of Congress’s Center for the Book during the National Book Festival. The Adult and Youth selections for Michigan are:
