Physical
Education is an integral part of the K-12 curriculum throughout Michigan. While most of the
Academic Standards for PE are focused on actual physical activity, there are some moments when no-dress days happen and physical activity for students is not possible. Maybe it’s raining, snowing, or sleeting and that day’s activity must be indoors. Perhaps
the gymnasium has been closed because of a local election taking place. Occasionally, individual students may have forgotten gym clothes or sustained an injury. Whatever the case, the
Michigan eLibrary (MeL) has many eResources for regular and alternative PE assignments.
Current Events
Standard 4.2 in the high school PE Academic Standards asks students to explore sports as current events and consider moral and ethical conduct in specific, competitive situations. Last month, men’s and women’s March Madness brackets would
certainly have offered some ripe investigations.
Dozens of full-text articles on gambling and sports are available in
MAS Complete as well as pro/con articles, infographics, statistics and video clips in
Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoint and
Points of View Reference Center. This month, The Masters Tournament can be explored through articles in
Golf Magazine,
Sports Illustrated, and
Golf Digest—publications currently available in
MasterFILE Complete.
Dance
I have not-so-fond memories of holding the sweaty palms of my middle school classmates as we promenaded around the gym, learning about square dancing. Dance is still an important part of secondary education. In Standard 2.4 students are
asked to identify examples of social and technical dance forms. Further, the Level 2 outcome of S2.4 pushes students to compare similarities and differences between these forms.
Britannica School offers a wide range of
dance content, including images and video clips. Students can investigate further, reading about
various dances in the
eBook High School Collection. Finally,
Dance Magazine, a publication in MAS Complete, gives contemporary information regarding the dance community.
History
Standard 2.1 invites students to explore the historical and cultural role of games, sports, and dance in a society. The eBook High School Collection has a
wide range of titles to support this endeavor, including
Tennis: A History from American Amateurs to Global Professionals;
Game of Privilege: An African American History of Golf;
Hockey: A Global History; and
American Sports in an Age of Consumption: How Commercialization is Changing the Game.
Next month, as enthusiasts gear up for the Kentucky Derby and Indianapolis 500, remember that MeL has resources to explore the history, culture, and ethics surrounding these events and so many more!
