It's an online platform (with a free app) that offers voice chat and instant messaging. It's easy to use and pretty straightforward. There are "channels" for organizing topics.

Discord originally got its start through gaming: video gamers would use it to talk during gaming. Then it was adopted by RPG members for D&D and others.
