
*Job Description* The Young Adult Services Coordinator has responsibility for planning and presenting activities for young adults—ages 13-19. *Job Objective* This position is primarily responsible for planning, directing, evaluating, scheduling, and coordinating young adult programs (ages 13-19). This position requires the development of recommendations for programs, policies, and procedures to improve young adult library services. The ideal candidate will create an environment where teens may engage more in the services of the library, where they feel accepted and motivated in pursing intellectual and recreational opportunities. There is collaboration with the Children’s Services Coordinator to include children’s programs, particularly in regard to the Summer Reading Program. *Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities* - Ability to develop, schedule, and perform programs for young adults. - Knowledge of young adult literature. - Ability to read professional journals to increase knowledge of issues and resources to help with future plans for the division. - Ability to stays current with community needs, programs and issues. - Knowledge of the general principles and specific details of adolescent development. - Knowledge and sense of the community’s needs and desires for young adult library services. - Knowledge of developmental, recreational and educational needs of young adults. - Ability to work with MS Office to produce marketing materials for programming. - Knowledge in social media to engage teens and promote programs. - Ability to create meaningful relationships with community organizations and schools that serve young adults in order to facilitate services that meet the needs of the young adults. - Knowledge of the principles and issues/policies of intellectual freedom and the ability to apply that knowledge in a library setting. - Skill and ability to effectively listen, ask and answer questions; communicate with adults and children; effectively interact with staff; effectively read, write and speak; effectively organize and give presentations to groups of listeners, including storytelling, read aloud, drama and puppetry; prepare press releases and monthly reports; and prepare written materials for programs, flyers, tickets, and game boards. - Requires a genuine liking and understanding of children of all ages; enthusiasm, optimism, resourcefulness, flexibility and creativity; excellent interpersonal skills. - Serves as supervisor for subordinate employees assigned to the division. Responsible for the daily supervision of assigned employees. - Skill in problem solving skills. - Ability to think logically. - Ability and knowledge to assist and instruct patrons in the use of library materials, including online databases, Internet sources, and the online catalog. - Comfortable working with diverse age groups and populations. - Friendly with people who use the library, both patrons coming through the front door and staff. - Ability to communicate well with colleagues and the general public. - Ability to analyze and creatively solve problems related to the position. - Ability to work with enthusiasm and initiative. - Ability to assume more difficult duties as experience increases; other duties as assigned. - Ability to plan, organize, and implement BDL's Summer Reading program in coordination with the Children’s Services Coordinator. *Physical Requirements* Must be able sit for extended periods of time. Must be able to operate assigned equipment, including computers. *Education, Experience, and Training* Preferred: Master’s degree in Library Science from an accredited American Library Association university and two (2) years’ professional library experience as a librarian in a public library. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. *Reports to* Library Director *Hours Required* This is a permanent part time position for 26 hours per week. The work schedule includes some nights and weekends. Coordination with Children’s Services Coordinator of coverage of all programs in Kids' Place is required. *Benefits* Sick time accrued after a 90-day probationary period.
