Due to the retirement
of the current director, the Board
of Trustees of Superior District Library (headquartered in Sault
Sainte Marie,
MI) is seeking an energetic leader with a strong commitment to
public library
service and the skills necessary to direct a diverse and unique
library system.
This newly-formed
(March, 2013) system, which encompasses
1,725 square miles in Michigan’s eastern Upper Peninsula is an
independent
district with a representative Board of Trustees and dedicated
funding. The Library’s
staff of 36 serve over 40,000 residents
with eight (8) library facilities.
An
annual operating budget of nearly $1 million is derived primarily from a
voted local tax. The
system’s award-winning libraries enjoy strong
support in each of their communities
Known as the Northern
Gateway to Canada, Sault Sainte
Marie itself is a community of 15,000, home to the world famous
Soo Locks,
connecting Lake Superior with Lake Huron. The “Sault” and its
neighboring
communities are a long- time favorite of tourists, as well as
home to the
highly respected Lake Superior State University, a dynamic and
fast- growing
regional medical center, several modern industrial parks, and
three
airports. An industrious local work
ethic and a minimal
bureaucracy with strong community collaboration help to make the
area both
welcoming and growing.
On the eastern end of
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, you’ll
find a wonderland of unspoiled natural beauty, charming small
town life,
world-renowned landmarks, and over a thousand years of Native
American history.
The region's abundant
natural beauty, nearby Great Lakes,
extensive National and State forests, and limitless outdoor
activities provide
recreation opportunities during every season.
Coupled with safe neighborhoods, lack of traffic
congestion, affordable
housing, extensive cultural activities, low cost of living, and
modern and
outstanding public and private educational facilities, it is a
great place to
live.
