Subject: [Michlib-l] New - Library Director Search - Sewickley Public Library (PA)

Library Director – Sewickley Public Library (PA)

The Board of Trustees of the Sewickley Public Library (PA), a Library Journal Star Library (2021), seeks a connected, caring, and committed leader as its next Library Director. Serving the eleven municipalities of the Quaker Valley School District and surrounding communities with a $1.2 million budget, 21 FTE, and a single location the library aspires to be the center for lifelong learning and free access to resources for its almost 14,000 residents. As a PA Forward Gold Level library, SPL is incorporating the program’s five key literacies into its programming and communications to demonstrate the value Pennsylvania libraries have to their communities. Library highlights include diverse and well-attended programming for all ages, consistent and outstanding customer service, and a critical technology assistance program for community members needing support. Key initiatives include creating a new strategic plan to guide the organization into the future; preserving a historic building and adapting it to be an innovative future-ready facility; communicating the importance and value of the library to the community and greater library profession; and developing a strong and open communication plan across the organization.

Situated along the Ohio river valley and just 11 miles Northwest of Pittsburgh, the Borough of Sewickley is a tight-knit community with a strong sense of pride and undeniable charm. Greater Pittsburgh is a place where outdoor enthusiasts can bike, walk, or run along the 24 miles of riverfront trails on the three rivers and can take advantage of the borough park system while Ohiopyle State Park, Laurel Highlands, and the Allegheny National Forest are just a short drive away. The Pittsburgh region has several nationally renowned cultural and educational institutions such as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Andy Warhol Museum, August Wilson African American Cultural Center, National Aviary, as well as the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and Duquesne University. The technology, higher education, and medical sectors have helped diversify the local economy. New additions like the Google Campus and steadfast organizations like the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Allegheny Health Network keep the region balanced and dynamic.

Responsibilities: The Library Director, under broad policy guidance and direction from the SPL board, performs professional and administrative duties in the planning, developing, implementing, and directing of library services. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: providing strategic planning and direction, supervision of personnel, creating and managing the library budget, developing and maintaining the public library collections and historic facilities, administering the policies established by the board, and overseeing and evaluating all library departments.

Qualifications: Five (5) years of experience as a librarian in an increasingly responsible supervisory and/or administrative position is required. A master’s degree in Library and Information Science granted by an approved college or university is required and substantial experience in public service is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess comfort with technology and its role in libraries, strong leadership and management skills, excellent communication skills, energy and enthusiasm, strong support of intellectual freedom, an innovative spirit, and the ability to coalesce the organization around a shared vision.  Candidates must submit FBI and PA Criminal Background Checks and PA Child Abuse History Clearance.

Compensation: The hiring salary range is $75,000 – $95,000 (with placement negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package.

For further information, contact Bradbury Miller Associates. Apply via email with a meaningful cover letter and your resume as Word or PDF attachments to Brian C. Hare (brianhare@bradburymiller.com). This position closes on Sunday, March 5, 2023.

Hello,

We have some alphabet labels - black letters on red labels - that we no longer need.  They are likely these: https://www.demco.com/demco-reg-alphabet-labels.  If you use them, we'd be happy to send them your way.  They are not complete sets.  We have about 25 sheets of partially used alphabet pages and additional pages of just the letters M and B.

Subject: [Michlib-l] MeL Minute: Making the Most of the MeL Business eResources

A picture containing text, clipart, sign

Description automatically generatedAccording to the Small Business Start-Up Guide: Michigan, small businesses provide 1.9 million jobs in our state and account for 99.6% of the state’s businesses. Local libraries can provide support to business owners through eResources in the Michigan eLibrary (MeL).

To help with market research, MeL includes access to Gale Business: DemographicsNow. Patrons can use the Demographics reports to learn about income, housing, race, age, education, retail spending, and consumer expenditures of the people in a selected geographic area such as a city, county, or ZIP code. Detailed information about the spending habits of potential customers can help determine whether an area could support new business activity. Using the People & Companies reports, business owners can create mailing lists to contact potential customers.

Entrepreneurs have access to thousands of SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) reports from MarketLine in Entrepreneurial Studies Source. These reports might be used for strategic planning, discovering new business avenues, and avoiding future pitfalls. Using the Company Profiles link at the top of the page, one can access MarketLine Reports that include information such as a company overview, business description, key employees, and major products and services (example: Pfizer, Inc.)

Keeping current on topics such as communication, leadership, workplace culture, and ethics can be easier if one has read the latest books on each topic. However, with only so much time in a day, Business Book Summaries can be a helpful tool. Each book is summarized in a concise report that includes Key Takeaways and an Overview. Those who prefer audiobooks can listen to an Audio Summary.

If you are interested in learning more about eResources for Michigan businesses offered by MeL, you can register for a free webinar that will include demonstrations of these tools to help library staff gain expertise and knowledge to help small businesses in your community thrive.

If you have any MeL eResources questions or issues, contact melerhelp@mcls.org for help.

Hello,

I have a partial box of Demco labels  of each 1st Reading Level (teal), 2nd Reading Level (red), 3rd Reading Level (mustard yellow), and 4th Reading level (royal blue).

Their SKU brings up these https://www.demco.com/demco-reg-reading-level-labels-1st ; though they’re not the same, they are similar. Attached is a photo, for those who can see attachments.

Free to the first library to respond with their RIDES code.
