Workshop Description: In recent years, “metadata” has become a buzzword used to define all manner of information collected and maintained that assists us in describing and finding content, both digital and analog. But how do you create and maintain meaningful metadata that makes your content repeatedly discoverable and usable for your audience? This workshop will delve into what quality preservation metadata consists of and how it may change and evolve over time. Our focus will be on creating and maintaining quality digital preservation metadata for born-digital and digitized content, while touching on the foundational aspects of metadata in general. Standards and models covered include PREMIS, METS, and the OAIS model. Instructor bios: Alexandra Provo is a Research Curation Librarian at New York University’s Division of Libraries and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute, where she teaches INFO-663: Metadata Design. As a curator for NYU’s UltraViolet preservation repository, she works with researchers to describe, organize, and publish their data. She has an MA in interdisciplinary studies from NYU, an MSLIS from Pratt Institute, and a BA in art history from Wesleyan University. Maureen Harlow is an experienced digital preservation practitioner. For over 11 years, she was the Director of the Media Library at PBS. Prior to that, Maureen was a National Digital Stewardship Resident at the National Library of Medicine, where she created policies and procedures for thematic web archiving. She has a Masters degree in Library Science and a Masters of Public Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a BA in History from the University of Notre Dame.
