Hello!

If this is a new policy as part of a new program, I would strongly recommend that you reach out to your attorney. Background checks not only require signed releases by the employee (or volunteer), but there is certain criminal history information that cannot be considered as part of a decision to hire or not hire – permit to participate or not permit to participate (and if the volunteers are minors, the parents or guardians must sign).  Michigan has in the past few years also passed legislation that can affect certain background check results.  In addition, there are other considerations such as information privacy, etc.

It is a good idea to discuss with your attorney exactly what kinds of information you need and how can you legally use it.

Here is some information that might be useful:

We've never done background checks for staff or volunteers, but with our outreach vehicle almost ready to go, we are going to start.

How does this work?

Is there a company you use?  What is the cost and timeframe?  What else should I know?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Perri
