With the legislative session rapidly approaching its end, time is of the essence. TODAY is the day to contact both your Representative and your Senator to voice your support
for the Freedom to Read Act!
The Freedom to Read Act legislation, tie-barred House Bills 6034 and 6035,
was introduced in the House on November 7 by Michigan State Representatives Veronica Paiz (D-Harper Woods) and Carol Glanville (D-Walker).
These bills will help to secure the right to read in Michigan’s public libraries and create a uniform set of rules dictating when and how library materials can be challenged
and removed from shelves. (The bills are identical except that one is directed toward district libraries and the other is directed toward libraries established as county libraries or as city, township, or village libraries.)
Your voice is essential in demonstrating public support for these bills. Legislators pay attention and vote positively when they know there is a lot of support for legislation,
especially from voters in their district.
To make things easy, MLA has drafted an email for your use, as well as a script you can use to call your legislators. We encourage you to email or make a personal call to both
your Representative's and Senator's offices TODAY.
