DIRECTOR
– VAN BUREN
DISTRICT LIBRARY (MICHIGAN)
The Board of Trustees of the Van Buren
District Library is
seeking an individual with proven financial and administrative
skills as well
as both the vision and commitment to lead a multi-branch library
system in beautiful
southwestern Michigan. The Van Buren District
Library consists of the
Webster Memorial Library in Decatur, which serves as the
headquarters library,
and six branches located throughout Van Buren County. The staff takes pride in
assuring the
branches work together as a community to serve their patrons’
diverse needs. The
system serves a population of almost 45,000 with a current
budget of $2.1
million and a staff of 52. The
library
system is autonomous and has a millage/levy, providing a secure
funding
base. The system also
enjoys additional
support from the Webster Trust.
Van Buren County is located in southwest
Michigan, half way
between Chicago and Detroit, allowing access to big city
amenities, while providing
all the benefits of small-town living.
The county is renowned as the "fruit basket of Michigan"
and
produces everything from apples, to blueberries, to
award-winning grapes and
wines. Twenty miles of
Lake Michigan
shoreline and 133 inland lakes help provide relaxation, fishing,
boating, and

Position requirements:
a graduate degree in Library and Information Science from
a program
accredited by the American Library Association; a minimum of
five (5) years of
post-degree employment in a public library, of which at least
three (3) years
have been in a management/supervisory position.
In addition to excellent financial management abilities,
the successful
candidate will have outstanding verbal and written communication
skills; be
able to articulate a vision for library service and inspire
others; have a
thorough understanding of library technology and applications;
and an open,
inclusive management approach. The
ability to work effectively with multiple constituencies and an
understanding
of small and rural libraries is essential. Experience in a
building project

Compensation: $82,000 - $90,000 dependent on
qualifications;
comprehensive benefit package including health, dental and
vision insurance;
life and long-term disability coverage; a 401 (a) retirement
plan with a 457 deferred
compensation option.
