   Could it have been "Peddler's Girl" by Elizabeth Howard...?  The girl & her father, the peddler, followed a trail across southern Michigan.  The trail is now one of the interstates, I believe. :)  It was/is a teen fiction.

Anyone have a suggestion on a teen fiction book, patron remembers it’s about kids on the potawami trail – her daughter who is 40 read it as a child. 

Quick search on-line doesn’t come up with anything.
