Have you tried using Thriftbooks? I know we use that here at our library for the books leftover from our book sale and I've used it personally as well and always had a great experience with them. I'm not sure exactly how good they are when it comes to what they will accept and how much is gained through it but perhaps it's looking into.

Hope this helps!

We used to use better world books and now we use B&T sustainable shelves, but out of the 722 books they are only buying 38 for $29.
Wasn't sure if anyone does this or could recommend some other company?

Hi Helena and Mariele,

Happy to answer your questions about seed libraries.

We divide and repackage most of our seeds, but quantity depends on the kind of seed. For larger seeds that are easy to count, like beans and squash, about 6-12 seeds per pack. Some more 'rare' seeds it may average less per pack so that I can get them out to more growers. For others that I have a large quantity of, it can average more. For small seeds that are harder to count, like mint or chamomile, I will pour out a commercial packet and divide them into smaller piles. I find an index card works well for this. I also use a pill counter tray.

We accept donations — home grown seed, commercial packs, opened packages, leftovers. We try to encourage seed saving and home grown seed, as well as any open-pollinated seed.

To: "michlib-l"<michlib-l@mcls.org>

------------------------- Contents -------------------------

I know this question gets periodically asked (even by myself 4 years ago), but we are finally going to upgrade our patron computers this summer and are looking for recommendations for time management software.

We don't need print management- our printer is set up for Papercut. We don't even need the option for reservations as computer usage is down from years ago and we rarely have anyone waiting. We're looking for a program that will lock PCs until a patron logs in with their library card or a guest pass, will block cardholders who don't have computer permissions, will automatically log a patron off when their time expires, will automatically shut down at the end of the night, and will give me usage reports. Being able to view a patron's screen would be a bonus.

What does your library use, and how do you like it? What is support like- are they responsive? Easy to work with?

Has anyone recently worked with Librarica's CASSIE? Our previous IT person worked with them a decade ago and had nothing good to say about the setup process or their support, but it's been quite a while and staff and technology change.

I'm also interested in mConsole, but have been having trouble getting a hold of them, and that doesn't bode well.

I appreciate any opinions! I can collect and share replies if anyone is interested.

Happy to jump in on this! At my seed library we accept donations from businesses, seed companies, seed swaps, and home gardeners. Part of the mission of our seed library is to educate the public about saving seeds and encouraging them to grow for the seed library to help it become self-sustaining.
The amount of donations ebbs and flows, but has been quite strong the last few years. We support the seed library with lots of programming.

I try to estimate how many seeds per packet based on how many seeds will produce something to eat and hopefully they can save a few seeds and increase the quantity. These are sample packets, not enough to grow a giant garden. We have to share the wealth with as many people as possible.
Beans and peas 20 per pack. Same for corn, enough to grow a block of (4) 4' rows
Squash, cucumbers, melons - enough for 2 hills or 4 feet of trellis so about 10 seeds
Packets of small seeds like carrots and lettuce get a healthy pinch that usually has 30-40 seeds
Beets, chard, parsnips around 16-20, enough for a 4' row.
Okra, roselle, sunflowers 10 or so.
Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, peppers: 8-12
Most flowers at least 10-15.
Scarce items less, but if you get a gallon ziploc of something you can be more generous or share with another seed library.

Subject: [Michlib-l] MeL Minute: Demonstrate Your Library's Value with Data
From: "Laura Warren-Gross"<warrengrossl@mcls.org>
Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2025 12:14:40 +0000
To: "MIchlib-l@mcls.org"<michlib-l@mcls.org>,"masl@remc.org"<masl@remc.org>,"meleresourceslist@mail3.mcls.org"<meleresourceslist@mail3.mcls.org>

------------------------- Contents -------------------------

I recently attended Michigan Library Association’s webinar “Data Storytelling for Libraries.” It made me think about how in libraries, like many other places, progress and success are measured by data. We are often asked to provide evidence of library value. How we obtain, interpret, and share our data can demonstrate this value to our communities. The Michigan eLibrary (MeL) includes eBooks and articles that can help library staff members learn how to gather and utilize data.

How do I gather data?

Being able to communicate effectively and convey the story of the library through data is one of the best ways to engage a community and get them excited about your mission. Say it with Data: A Concise Guide to Making Your Case and Getting Results in the eBook Academic Collection is a good place to start when learning about data and libraries. It includes methods used to gather, measure, and present data including communication strategies and checklists to help prepare for surveys, focus groups, and presentations. There are also sample surveys and results analysis.

Which chart would work best?

Another eBook in the eBook Academic Collection can help us understand the principles of data visualization and which type of chart will work to best convey our data. Better Data Visualizations: A Guide for Scholars, Researchers, and Wonks also includes information to help decide which colors and symbols will make a chart most readable and examples of tools that can be used to create graphs and charts.

Show me examples!

If you’re looking for examples of how a library has carried out successful data collection to make decisions, Jane Martel’s article "Creating Value From Data: Informing Decisions & Improving Public Library Services" from American Libraries in Library & Information Science Source, provides examples of how different departments in her library system have used data to make decisions about their purchasing, programs, and services. Reviewing data across departments helped to better understand how to improve vital areas of the library including summer reading, facilities, outreach, and resource allocation.

As libraries are asked to demonstrate their value in communities, use the eBook Academic Collection and Library & Information Science Source from MeL to locate additional helpful content and learn best practices in data collection and sharing methods to make clear and convincing points about the materials, services, and programs the library provides to its patrons.
