Reading their story in my local newspaper, I was inspired to further investigate the urgent need for such initiatives. Among the many things that I learned through the Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> (MeL) eResources, is that “birds, bats, insects and many other pollinators are disappearing, putting our entire food supply in jeopardy.” (Helmer<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&encode=1&proxy=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=&target=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=e700xna&AN=2044947&site=ehost-live&scope=site&ebv=EB&ppid=pp_Front_Cover>) I also learned that there are several resources in MeL on both the decimation of pollinators as well as the many ways we can revitalize what’s been lost. Globally, bees pollinate about $24 billion worth of crops—almost 10 percent of the total value of food production worldwide. Due to pesticides, development, and the elimination of certain plant species, bee populations are in rapid decline.
