This is great opportunity to remind everyone in the Michigan library community that your library establishment, meaning the actual legal authority your library was created under, dictates many of the circumstances around how your individual library operates. In Michigan there are TEN different types of public libraries operating under NINE different establishment laws. Don't forget what may work or be followed for one public library may not be what can or should be followed by another one. Always refer to your library's establishment first, then go from there when considering or researching what your individual library operates. Clare has/is followed up with this one library that is a district library. If you would like to review all the establishment laws you can find more details here: https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,9327,7-381-88855_89735_89755---... I just reviewed it when this question came up. Pages 11 & 14 both have a blurb about Trustees not benefiting financially from their affiliation with their library. I am certainly not a lawyer, but I was always under the impression that being a Trustee was a volunteer position even when elected. This is a great question for Clare. Other businesses that hold monthly meetings pays their board. The average is about $30 per meeting. We are curious, because it is very hard to find board members and very hard when we do get one for them to actual participate. Maybe.... they would be more involved if they got paid. Just an idea they were batting around.
