As a cataloger, I've seen increasing requests over the past 18+ months for original cataloging of materials that utilize some amount of AI in an item's creation.
In the conversations I've had so far with library people, many folks were unaware that materials they purchased utilized AI in its creation, and AI's use is frequently not disclosed on these items.
This increase has been particularly significant in certain categories of materials such as children's books and recipe books.
Since ALA guidance on AI and libraries is forth coming (the working group was just formed in June 2025), I'm curious what Michigan libraries are experiencing as they add materials to their collections in the age of AI. This in mind, I've been trying to come up with some best practices and guidelines while we wait for guidance from national groups like ALA.
PCC does have this existing document, but it does not cover materials that you
suspect utilize AI but its use is not explicitly disclosed in the work.
I've created a short survey asking a few questions about the topic. I'd like to encourage not only library directors,
but interested staff working in acquisitions/collection development/cataloging to fill out the survey with their experience. My hope is to create a presentation discussing the implications of AI on library collections and an opportunity for those interested in this topic to discuss it.
