Job Description

The Technical Services Specialist provides operational, technical and clerical support to the Technical Services & Systems Unit by processing inter-library loan (ILL) borrowing and lending requests; fulfilling MeLCat (Michigan Electronic Library Catalog) resource sharing services requests; running regular MeLCat reports and statistics to ensure effective service delivery; assisting in copy cataloging of leisure reading materials as well as compiling and inputting electronic resources usage statistics in the Library’s in-house database. The Technical Services Specialist works collaboratively in a team environment committed to supporting student success in the College.

Essential Duties:

Processes and packages incoming and outgoing MeLCat and inter-library loan (ILL) materials. Checks out materials to borrowing libraries and patrons, receives, and checks-in materials returned to Library. Ensures that materials are sent promptly and returned per agreements with other libraries. Responds to inquiries by patrons and participating MeLCat libraries regarding materials requested as well as handles reporting of delivery problems. Runs, prepares, and follows-up various MeLCat reports. Collects and compiles monthly statistics regarding MeLCat and ILL requests.

Works with the Electronic Resources Management Librarian to compile and collect usage statistics of electronic resources and inputs data into the Library’s in-house database.

Provides copy cataloging for the leisure reading collection.

Process institutional overdue emails and follow up with Accounting Office regarding invoices and payments for lost or damaged library materials.

Attend training on new developments directly affecting interlibrary loan job duties or other trainings provided by MeL/Library of Michigan/MLA/MCLS regarding resource sharing.

Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Core Competencies:

Knowledge and demonstrated ability in using Sierra library system, Microsoft office software and products, and Windows operating system.

Familiarity with bibliographic records searching, editing, and uploading using SkyRiver or OCLCConnexion client.

Ability to use equipment such as printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, and phone systems.

Proficiency in searching the Internet.

Knowledge and demonstrated ability in using Banner applications and College systems.

Knowledge and understanding of college, divisional and library goals, policies, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or higher required

Library experience required

Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office products and other productivity tools required.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity and experience in technical services, interlibrary loan, and database maintenance in an automated library system environment preferred.

Familiarity with Sierra library system preferred.

Additional Information

Standard hours of operation are between 8:00 to 5:00 pm, weekdays.

Specific hours will be determined by the supervisor.
