The 5 winners have been named for the 2021 CSLP Teen Video Challenge!
This national contest from the Collaborative Summer Library Program encouraged teens to create 60-second public service type videos that promote reading and library use to other teens, and interpret the CSLP theme of Tails and Tales. These videos show the amount of talent, creativity, and thoughtfulness that went into all of this year's submissions. You can see the winning videos here:

They are fun, creative, and inspiring! The winning teens/teen teams each received a $200 cash prize from CSLP.
Libraries are welcome to use any/all of the winning videos to help promote their summer program, reading, and library use in general. A shout out to New York: 4 of the 5 winning videos came from New York!! The fifth winner is out of Florida. Another shout out goes to the wonderful judging panel that made very difficult decisions to narrow down so many excellent, creative entries to these 5 winners! And special thanks to Luke Kralik of CSLP, who wrangled forms, updated the website, participated in the judging panel, sent out prizes, and more to make this contest happen again. 

2021 will be the last year for this long-running contest. CSLP will be looking for ideas to engage with teens across the country during the summer in fresh new ways (have ideas? Please send 'em our way!). Many thanks to all of you that promoted this contest in your state and community!

Reimaging School Readiness

Please plan to join us live for this 2-part series, offered by the Bay Area Discovery Museum, created to introduce librarians to the research, practical implications, and resources offered in their Reimagining School Readiness toolkit.

Research shows that beliefs about intelligence and ability impact one's performance and response to failure. Learn more about what research says, how to examine and change your own mindset, and what you can do to help support children's growth mindset and persistence through challenge.

Do you wonder what research really says about how to support school readiness? Based on a comprehensive review of cognitive and developmental psychology, the key findings in Reimagining School Readiness aim to surface the skills and conditions that matter most for a child's success in school and life, and to guide educators and others (including families) in designing learning experiences and environments to support this development.

Attendees will gain insights into the current research behind the skills and conditions that matter most for a child's success in school and life. The workshop will include an overview of BADM's Reimagining School Readiness Toolkit that library staff can use to supplement or create quality school readiness programming.

Instructor: Michelle Wessman Randall, PhD, Head of Evaluation at the Bay Area Discovery Museum (BADM) and BADM staff.

This project is made possible by grant funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the State of Michigan through the Library of Michigan.

NGCP Anniversary Fellows Program

National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP) is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2022. As part of our anniversary celebrations, we are offering a remote-based, nine-month professional development program open to early career professionals, and graduate students, interested in gender equity and informal STEM education. Fellows will contribute to NGCP’s ongoing STEM and equity projects and will have diverse opportunities to learn and collaborate with the NGCP national network. Fellows will also participate in advanced training on gender equity and cultural responsiveness and receive ongoing mentorship and support. Application deadline is November 23, 2021.

Strategies for News Literacy in Today’s Divided Culture

This edWebinar will help educators navigate the world of news and media by engaging in strong relationships with students and providing them with reliable skills and habits.

K.C. Boyd is a Washington, D.C. librarian and News Literacy Project ambassador preparing students with essential skills in the midst of Black Lives Matter, the January 6th insurrection, and vaccine misinformation. K.C. will share how she teaches students the importance of watching local and national news, and how to identify misinformation in their news feeds by using the following teaching strategies:

• Active teacher listening: Teachers can better understand the student experience and moderate tough conversations
• Finding student-friendly news sources: Identify trusted resources with journalistic integrity, but also meet students where they’re at on social media
• Engaging in civics: Highlight ways for students to be informed about their world, understand their options, and take a stand for what they believe in

K.C. will demonstrate activities and share takeaway resources that will allow attendees to replicate her strategies with their own students.

This edWebinar will be of interest to school and district leaders, teachers, and librarians of middle and high school levels. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.
