Voices from the Flats: Readings from
Michigan’s Venice, the Transformation of the St. Clair Maritime Landscape, 1640 – 2000

Dr. Daniel Harrison
Department of Anthropology,
Wayne State University
From the arrival of European explorers, missionaries, and traders, the St. Clair region has been a noteworthy experience. Over more than three centuries, land and water were transformed by successive
maritime societies: Indigenous, colonial, industrial, and recreational. Drawing on contemporary journals, memoirs, official reports, maps, and illustrations, Dr. Harrison presents the flow of history through the voices of participants and eyewitnesses. The
readings are excerpts from his award-winning book, Michigan’s Venice: The Transformation of the St. Clair Maritime Landscape, 1640 – 2000.
