Schooners on the Great Lakes Schooners, or ships with fore-and-aft sails on two or more masts, were once the workhorses of the Great Lakes. During the nineteenth century, thousands of schooners sailed the Great Lakes. They carried cargoes of lumber, grain, iron ore, and even Christmas trees. They were cheap to operate and needed only a small crew. The ships vanished from the Great Lakes in the early twentieth century when bigger and faster steamships replaced them. The French fort, trading post, and Jesuit mission was founded in 1691 and abandoned after the American Revolution.
