Good afternoon,

I wanted to share this nice note about my aunt, Joyce Keys who recently passed away. Some of you may have known her when she worked for Kettering  in interlibrary loan and then cataloging.

To our Florida Tech community:

It is with sadness we report the passing of Joyce Keys, an 18-year employee at Evans Library whose role as an Institutional Repository & Metadata Specialist helped ensure the university’s Scholarship Repository was expertly managed and updated.

Keys passed away June 30 in Palm Bay. She was 74.

Keys came to Florida Tech from Kettering University in her hometown of Flint, Michigan, in October 2001 to work as a library technician. Over the ensuing 18 years, she served as a cataloger and a librarian before becoming a repository specialist until her retirement in June 2019.

Keys served for many years on Florida Tech’s Staff Advisory Committee.

In a note to Evans Library Dean Holly Miller, Keys’s nephew, Trenton Smiley, said it was clear his aunt had a deep connection with the library and Florida Tech.

“Through our numerous conversations about libraries, I knew how much she enjoyed the profession and her 18+ years at Florida Tech,” he wrote. “During my family vacations traveling to Florida, we would always visit Aunt Joyce, which included a tour of the FIT campus so she could proudly show off the new updates before we headed to the beach.”

Keys was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where she served for six years.

Funeral services are set for July 14 in Flint. Arrangements are being handled by Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home.
