The 2018 PSAs are Here! The 2018 PSAs are live and ready for use! This year’s Summer Reading Champion, Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, wrote and performed the music, and it is quite catchy! The PSAs are available in both Spanish and English, and have been recorded in a variety of file types and durations to meet your library’ needs. NEW Music Titles for Libraries Rock! by Sharon Rawlins There are many books suggested in the Libraries Rock 2018 Summer Reading manuals but here are a few titles that have recently or will soon be published with the music theme running through them: Rock ‘n’ Roll Soul by Susan Verde (Picture Book, PreS – Gr. 3) Publishing May 15, 2018 What will a young girl do for the school’s student musicians’ talent show? She can’t play an instrument so she brashly chooses to be herself and sing her own song loud and proud, “I’ve got a rock ’n’ roll soul!” All Summer Long by Hope Larson (Gr. 5-7) Published 5/1/18 This summer thirteen-year-old guitarist and songwriter Bina’s best friend Austin’s at camp, and is ignoring her texts, so she hangs out with Austin’s older sister Charlie who’s got a broken arm. Even after Austin comes home he acts differently toward Bina, and Charlie is unkind, so Bina finds her own way in this coming-of-age middle-grade graphic novel. She Loves You (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah) by Ann Hood, (Gr. 5-8) Publishing 6/26/18 The year is 1966, and Trudy, 12, is obsessed with the Beatles. She’s dying to meet Paul McCartney. On a hot August day, without their families’ knowledge, Trudy and three other kids from the school’s Beatles fan club set off from RI to Boston to see them, each with their own hopes for the future. The Pros of Cons by Allison Cherry, Lindsay Ribar, and Michelle Schusterman (Gr. 8-11) Published 3/27/18 Three different girls befriend each other as they attend three different conventions (drumming, taxidermy, fanfic) in the same location, including Phoebe, a percussionist, who’s thinks of herself as just one of the guys. She’s determined to beat them all in the solo competition at the Indoor Percussion Association Convention but things don’t go as planned. Jazz Owls: A Novel of the Zoot Suit Riots by Margarita Engle (Gr. 6-12) Publishing 5/8/18 Gangs of white navy sailors terrorize Mexican-American neighborhoods of jazz loving zoot suiters in 1943 Los Angeles after Mexican-American man (real- life victim) Jose Diaz is killed at a party. Engle’s fictionalized novel-in-verse powerfully portrays a little-known historical event that resulted in violence and rioting after the police engaged in racial profiling. Love Songs and Other Lies by Jessica Pennington (Gr. 9 & Up) Published 4/24/18 Vee, songwriter and guitarist, is on a band competition tour with her best friend, and discovers one of the band members is her ex, Cam. PBS Resources: Libraries Rock! WQED, the PBS affiliate in Pittsburgh, PA is working with CSLP this year to help our member libraries augment their summer reading programming this year with resources from PBS. For the past three years WQED has been teaming up with its local libraries to encourage family engagement and a love of learning through a program called Inquire Within. Inquire Within has provided regional libraries with programming ideas, learning opportunities, resources supporting family/inter-generational centered activities. One component of Inquire Within is a manual of PBS resources structured around the chapter headings of the CSLP Manual. This year we are offering these resources to the entire CSLP membership. To access these resources login to the CSLP online manual and look for the “Resources – PBS” in the file tree. Or simply type PBS into the search box. The Inquire Within program is much more than just a collection of resources. It is a model you can use to collaborate with your own local PBS station. Former children’s librarian, and current WQED Education Team Manager, Liz Kostandinu has graciously agreed to help connect you to your own PBS affiliate. She can be contacted at lkostandinu@wqed.org. Upcoming Artists, Themes, and Slogans This year’s CSLP Annual Meeting took place in Denver, CO. Despite facing days that started with snow and ended in the mid 70’s, attendees were able to come together and select slogans for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 program years. Without further ado, the upcoming artists, themes, and slogans! 2020: Imagine Your Story With artist LeUyen Pham at the helm, 2020 is shaping up to be an outstanding program year for summer reading. With themes of fairytales, mythology, and fantasy, libraries of all shapes and sizes will have a magical starting point to dazzle their communities! 2021: Tails and Tales Few children’s illustrators are as uniquely suited to an animals themed program as Salina Yoon. Picture her work with ducks, penguins, and porcupines! Are you excited yet? It is quite possible that new levels of adorableness will be discovered in 2021. 2022: All Together Now While themes are always important, it is really the slogan that crystallizes the identity of the program year, and 2022 will be no different. Artist Sophie Blackall will be providing the illustrations, and it should be a wonderful year for libraries to highlight the unifying effect they have on their communities.
