CSLP Inclusion Training: “Inclusive & Affirming Programs for LGBTQIA+ Youth”

On November 22, the CSLP Inclusion Committee hosted a virtual training led by Amanda Erickson from the Kaleidoscope Youth Center in Columbus, Ohio. The inclusion committee selected this topic at a time when the LGBTQIA+ community has especially been a target of violence, and books with representative characters and stories are being challenged. It is vital for all youth to find representation in books, and to feel safe in welcoming, inclusive spaces. This training would provide information on how to be a better ally and develop cultural competencies.
During the training, attendees learned about historical context, shared language, and inclusive best practices using pronouns. We also discussed implicit bias and the levels of bias, including individual, organizational, systemic bias, and the process of becoming a disruptor. Disruptors support diversity in the community and the coming out process, calling out negative behavior toward LGBTQIA+ youth to create a safe space. Amanda also shared insight on creating library programs, such as book clubs, story times, and other LGBTQIA+ specific programs.
After the presentation portion, a safe space was created for attendees to ask any questions they might have about the LGBTQIA+ community. Action steps and a list of resources were shared at the end.

New Urban Libraries Council White Paper Calls on Libraries to Address Food Justice

Find the Urban Libraries Council (ULC) latest white paper, “Food is a Right: Libraries and Food Justice,” which addresses the current state of food insecurity across North America and the strategic role libraries play in addressing local needs. Included in the paper are descriptions of programs, services and activities leading libraries are implementing and recommendations for other library leaders to follow in ensuring their community is nourished.
