In general, we waive fines if the materials are returned. If someone is a repeat offender, we ask for them to pay up or return the materials. We charge them for the “lost” materials. We send letters out for those with long lists and tell them how much it will cost to replace the materials they didn’t return. That usually gets their attention and they return them or pay for them.

Subject: [Michlib-l] waiving lost fines and fees

Hi everyone! I know that some libraries remove old fines and fees after

a certain number of years. Has anyone ever done an amnesty month or

event, where if people bring back their books they fees will also be

removed?  Did you have concerns about repeat offenders when doing that?

How old did the fines and fees have to be to be waived? Any info that

anyone has would be great.

Thanks!

Jenn Donner
