The Youth Services staff is in charge of his care. (Yes, Dolores is male-we found out a year after the community named him.) He does not need to eat every day, so we feed him on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and bathe him once a week for additional hydration. The public loves him, and we feed him where they can watch and we also get him out for people to hold him on request (we accommodate them as often as we have staff to spare.) It works very well for us, and the people in our community adore him. Something we started a year ago was the Dragon Master program. We offer middle school students the chance to volunteer to come one day a week to feed/bathe Dolores. There are a number of middle school teachers here who have bearded dragons in their classrooms, so the students already have some experience when they get to us. It has been a great way to get a steady stream of kids who might not otherwise participate to interact at the library . They are part of the rodent family and simply adorable. Our patrons love them. One of my staff is the main caretaker, the "Degu Mom," but others pitch in to fill the water and give them treats.
